Why has Bozeman consistently been rated as one of the worlds best “communities for retiree’s”, “fastest growing cities”? Why does Forbes magazine define Bozeman as a city in “a good growth position”?  Bozeman’s economy is supported on four pins: agriculture, technology, tourism, and government.

Bozeman is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. In every direction the horizon is jagged with breathtaking mountains enveloping the valley. We enjoy world class skiing,  unparalleled fishing, extensive white water rafting and climbing that will keep seasoned veterans on their toes. Glacial lakes dot our vast landscape, fresh flowing mountain water provides our drinking water.

Bozeman is in no way a traditional vacation hot spot, even though nearly 1 million tourists visit our city annually. Instead, it is becoming a Silicon Valley filled with outdoor enthusiasts. Entrepreneurs can thrive in Bozeman free of traffic congestion.  (The average commute time of a Bozeman resident is 14 minutes, as opposed to the national average of 26 minutes.) A small drawback of our location, we are still experiencing a lag time on city-wide installed improved technologies such as fire wire.

Currently, 85 tech companies call Bozeman home. Montana State University, Bozeman’s largest employer (rated the number 2 university town by e-Podunk in 2000) hosts a research atmosphere that nourishes these companies both with technology advances and new employees.

Fiscally wise entrepreneurs capitalize on one of Montana’s unique features… we do not have a sales tax. Montana Taxes Montana’s individual income tax is a progressive income tax, similar to the federal personal income tax. This is based on the net income of residents and not resident individuals, fiduciaries and beneficiary of estates and trusts. Residents of Montana are taxed on income from all sources, regardless of where earned. Non-residents are taxed on income earned from any Montana source.

The National Forest Service is another leading employer for Bozeman. In the past four years, the need for this resource has been accelerated in conjunction with our increased fire seasons. The National Forest Service also maintains our extensive hiking trails and natural resources.

Bozeman is a small town with big city amenities. Our economy is a reflection of our diverse community.
